EC = A + C + M

If you're familiar with my material at all, your biggest question is probably "What is this Communication Equation™ you keep talking about?"

So, to cut out the suspense, there it is. Right up there at the top of the page. It looks incredibly simple - which it honestly is - although it's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to improving your communication. While the Equation provides a powerful guideline, there is plenty of nuance and detail within it.

But don't worry! That's what I'm here for. I can show you or your team exactly how to use the Equation in any setting to truly master your message. For now though, let's take a look at the basics:

  • EC is "Effective Communication"

    • This is your overall goal. When specifically defined, it's what your communication is intended to achieve...that's what makes it "effective."

  • A is "Audience IQ"

    • This is my term for your complete identification of and relation to your audience. It's composed of several parts, and without nailing it, your message is D.O.A.

  • C is "Credibility"

    • Aristotle called this "Ethos." It's your answer to the audience question of "Why should I listen to you?"

  • M is "Message"

    • Perhaps more specifically, "Message Design." This involves the structure used to convey your message. Despite what the majority of other communication material out there might say, it's far more significant than delivery if you want your communication to truly have an impact.

That gives you the building blocks to get started. From there, I'll help you learn specific strategies, skills and methods to maximize each element.

My favorite aspect of the Equation, and the reason I chose an "equation-based" framework in general, is because it provides three useful things:

  1. Simplicity: A short "equation" like this is easy to remember, so you can always recall and apply it when needed.

  2. Flexibility: It's applicable in literally any setting where communication is necessary. Like I say all the time - that's everything!

  3. Consistency: Equations are cut-and-dry, because there's not a lot of grey area in math. Yet even without numbers, this equation works the same. The more effectively the three elements on the right are deployed, the more effective the communication will be, every time.
